When is swarming season for termites? Any helpful tips to prevent them from entering indoors? Are there any other methods to eliminate them besides tenting?
The swarming season takes place during our hottest months, so essentially late May up until late September. If your home does not have any termites, then the best way to prevent them swarming is to keep screens and doors shut. Make sure all A/C, electrical, and cable entry points are sealed as best as possible. This will prevent them from being able to enter. If you do have termites already, the swarming is only prevented by getting rid of them altogether.
Regarding other methods besides tenting: we explored several different methods, including comprehensive heat treatment, spot heat treatment, drilling and spot treatments, etc. We ultimately found these to be ineffective and/or unsafe. For comprehensive heat treatments, the risk of electrical, plumbing, and other damage is far too high to complete on Bermuda homes. For all the above-mentioned spot treatments, they only kill what they contact. It is impossible to penetrate an entire structural beam or other heavily wooded area such as flooring with spot treatments. It, therefore is ineffective.
There is another issue in that somebody may feel there is an isolated termite colony in one area of their house due to wings and dust, however this is almost always not the case. There is likely an infestation in other areas that have not yet prevented themselves as they are still deep within the wood.
In all, we found that if we offered spot treatments our customers would be left disappointed. It would not solve the problem and would only require ongoing servicing, which over time would be sure to exceed the cost of fumigation.
I'm not sure if I have flying ants or termites, and all I find are wings! How do I tell them apart?
Check out our Blog post - Flying Ants vs. Termites - How to Spot the Differences. If all you're finding, however, are wings, then we suggest sweeping up some of the wings and taking a closer look. You will be able to identify whether they are from ants or termites based on the wing sizes. If all the wings are similar in size and uniform in width, then they are likely from termites. If the wings are a bit transparent and seem to have a similar number of smaller, thinner wings, then they are likely from flying ants. If it's still tough to tell, send us a picture and we can have one of our technicians confirm for you.
What is the average cost for termite tent fumigation?
Termite Tent Fumigation pricing varies widely and is calculated after a visit by an Eco Pest technician, as it is based on the configuration and size of the house or structure. The calculation is done by the cubic foot, not the square foot.
There are several factors that influence the price, such as the under seal of the house (slab or crawl space) and overall complexity of the house/structure design. Some fumigations take 2 days and others take 4-5 days. Humidity, wind, temperature, and the target wood-destroying species also play a role in the amount of fumigant required.
Based on the factors we have listed above, we are seeing residential fumigations range anywhere from $4k to $15k.
Eco Pest offers free quotes for fumigation as the price is tailored for the house/structure.
